Fenton Posada
The Mexican Posada comes to Fenton
Temple Street Methodist Church is using the tradition of the Mexican Posada this year to provide a different experience of the run up to Christmas, to engage with the local community, and to have some fun!
What is ‘The Posada’ you may ask?
Well, the Posada is a Mexican tradition in which children dressed as Mary and Joseph travel round for a period before Christmas, imitating Jesus’ parents search for somewhere to spend the night.
The Posada – the Spanish word means ‘lodging’ – is becoming increasingly popular as a way of providing some excitement in the weeks leading up to Christmas and a way of involving a variety of people in the community, schools and churches.
We’re not using children dressed as Mary and Joseph for obvious reasons but we do have a two dimensional Mary and Joseph who are pictured on the left here.
Our 4ft high figures of Mary and Joseph will be travelling around different homes, schools, shops and organisations for the whole of Advent i.e. from 2nd December to Christmas Day.
We’re looking for hosts for Mary and Joseph – schools, shops, offices, churches, retirement homes, in fact anywhere where Mary and Joseph will meet people.
Mary and Joseph will travel with their own overnight bag which includes some information about the Christmas story, a camera so that you can take a photo of your visitors, and a journal for you to write a few words about where Mary and Joseph were and perhaps some comments about them from people who have seen them.
We’ll be asking the question, ‘Where are Mary and Joseph today?’ on our Church website, www.templestreetchurch.org.uk and in our twitter feed, @FentonPosada. We’ll be telling the people of Fenton where Mary and Joseph can be spotted each day.
We’re looking to bring the community together this Christmas as Mary and Joseph travel from one place to another around the town.
If you’d like to host Mary and Joseph for the day or night, or even part of the day, or if you’d like to invite Mary and Joseph to your Christmas event, please contact Glenn Parkes on 01782 847489 or e-mail the Church at ‘office@templestreetchurch.org.uk’.
On Sunday 23rd December they will be coming into church for the Carol Service at 10.00am when there will be the gift of a small nativity scene for each family to remind them of Mary and Joseph's journey and the birth of Jesus.
